Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates (pronounced pih-lah-teez) was developed by Joseph Pilates, born in 1880 in Germany. He was a frail child and with a determination to improve his fitness, developed a programme of exercises focussing, amongst other things, on strengthening and stabilising the muscles in the lower back and abdominals.
Interned in the war years, he further developed and taught a fitness programme for other POWs to maintain their fitness, health and wellbeing.
After the war he moved to America and opened his first studio, initially working with dancers who continued to use his methods. Pilates is now popular worldwide, due to the fact it is a holistic exercise programme aiming to create a balance in the body. It also uses the mind to create an awareness of your own body.
Each exercise is built around eight basic principles.
Pilates Method

Exercises may be floor-based, or use specialised equipment.
All Pilates movements are initiated by muscles in the abdominal area (our core). By having good control of these muscles first, you are able to stabilise and control your trunk while moving bother upper limbs and lower limbs.
